The district of Tabanan lies between the regencies of Badung in the east and Jembrana in the west, and is made up of mountains and plains. Tabanan is well-known for Tanah Lot, probably the most-photographed temple in Bali. According to legend, as the legendary priest Nirartha breathed his last, he suggested to the locals that the tiny island would be an excellent place to built a temple. Tanah means earth, and Lot means sea. The temple therefore symbolized the meeting point of natural and cosmic elements.
Tanah Lot is also a fantastic place to view beautiful sunsets. Every day at dusk, tourists throng the area to witness the magnificent silhouette of the temple against the glowing horizon. The best view is from the cliff overlooking the temple.
The city of Tabanan is a modern, prosperous home to a substantial ethnic Chinese community. It is the birthplace of Mario, a dancer who revolutionized Balinese dance in the 30's with his kebyar and commemorated by The Mario Theatre.
Southwest of Tabanan is Kerambitan. The enchantment of this place lies in the fact that it is still to be affected by modernization. It is particularly noted for the beautiful old buildings and two large palaces.
The villages of Belimbing, Munduk are all located in the regency of Tabanan, with Medewi being in the regency of Jembrana
